In Bayreuth, the historic Markgräfin-Wilhelmine-Gymnasium has been extended with a new wing. With its minimalist design, the structure – designed by Code Unique Architects – echoes the axial layout of the main building and develops it further. A circumferential circulation structure links the old and new buildings to form a coherent spatial composition. The resulting inner courtyard forms the heart of the complex and provides a sheltered space for events, breaks and socialising.
Along the flanks of the building complex, loosely arranged groups of trees and shrubs, together with extensive ground cover plantings, define the arrival and communal areas. Playfully positioned seating cubes invite visitors to linger and, with their cheerful design, provide a deliberate contrast to the minimalist, austere design language of the new building.
The site, which slopes steeply down towards the Red Main, is spatially organised by a grand open staircase and green embankments. In the lower-lying area, the motif of seating areas loosely arranged amongst groups of trees continues. Table tennis tables complement the range of leisure and exercise facilities.
Im Atrium kreuzen sich alle Wege. Der zentrale Innenhof über der neuen Turnhalle füllt die Fuge zwischen alt und bildet das Herz der erweiterten Schule. Er bietet einen würdigen Rahmen für Veranstaltungen und dient zudem im Alltag für Pausen und Bewegung. Rückgrat des Raumes und prägendes Gestaltungselement ist die lange Bank.
Lockere Gruppen aus Blumen-Eschen und flächige Bodendecker bilden einen grünen Rahmen für die Sitzbereiche. Die mehrstämmigen Blumeneschen (Fraxinus Ornus) sind besonders klimaresilient.
