Berlin, 2022
The Oliva Square connects the history of the eponymous Polish monastery Oliva with the characteristics of an open space in Berlin. Lying within the prominent neighbourhood of the Kurfürstendamm, it is meant to become a park with quiet corners, an extended stage for Berlin street life, a protected playground for residents and a transit area for cyclists and pedestrians. Due to the closely planted trees and narrow pavements, an extensive open space will be created in the western part of the park. Seating areas in the shade, diverse planting, playing devices, a water basin and some outdoor seats of local restaurants are all elements of this newly created space. The previously existing and newly planted trees in the northern and southern corners of the park form solid edges and leave an open and sunny area in the centre. The new elegantly decorated flowerbeds form a “green walkway” as a counterpart to the runways and corridors of Berlin’s everyday city life. Reminiscent to Oliva and the Kashubian love for petite décor, the surface of the pavement will be decorated with a gracile wattlework of slightly altered, floral seeming quatrefoil.
