The Małopolskie Science Centre (Małopolskie Centrum Nauki), an edutainment centre that aims to teach the basics of science through playful experimentation, was built on the site of a disused airport near the city of Krakow. The design of the open space is based on the design concept of the building: different areas correspond to different parts of the human body.
The large accessible green roof, directly connected to the exhibition areas, symbolises the brain, the control centre of the body. Walkways and steps on the sloping roof invite visitors to stroll and linger. The roof garden, planted with wild shrubs and herbs, provides an excellent vantage point over the city and also serves as a grandstand for air shows and other events on the runways.
The main path leading visitors from the forecourt to the exhibition areas represents the artery that connects the different parts of the body, while the front of the building symbolises the musculoskeletal system. This area is designed to encourage visitors to be active. A large play and exercise area has therefore been created between the succession areas.
