Markkleeberg, 2006

For both the athletes and the visitors the white water facilities at Markkleeberger See (Lake Markkleeberg) are representing a sports venue which, due to its distinct aesthetics and manifold possible uses, is innovatively integrated into a former surface coal mine.

The area features a central sports area and surrounding venues which are framing the sports facilities on three sides. Spacious meadows with scattered pine trees are harmoniously integrating the sports centre with its surroundings. Within this area naturally designed bleachers integrate well with the surrounding landscape due to their simplicity of form and material. From here the spectators enjoy a panoramic view of the whole competition course, while the Lake Markkleeberg serves as scenic background. Within the central sports area riprap is creating a rugged natural character along the channels and basins.
