The area surrounding the Red Bull Arena Leipzig is affected and influenced by various dynamic processes of urban development. In addition to the expansion of the stadium capacity, these include the opening up of the Alte Elster and the integration of museum and educational facilities. The masterplan provides a guideline for the integrated management of these objectives. On the one hand, the aim is to create an urban space with the stadium forecourt that can cope with the flow of visitors and traffic at events as well as being a versatile "place for every day". On the other hand, the opening up of the Alte Elster offers the opportunity to establish a cycle and pedestrian-friendly urban axis along the watercourse, which will complete Leipzig's open space system as an important green link. A key aspect of the masterplan is the development of multifunctional structures as a sustainable design principle for the entire area.
