Siegen, 2024

The city of Siegen has set itself the goal of making the obstructed banks of the Sieg accessible again and thus better linking the urban and river areas. The ‘Siegen to new shores’ programme is gradually redesigning open spaces along the river, one of which is the Herrengarten, a site with a chequered history - once a princely garden, later a car park and finally the site of a shopping centre.

The reclaimed Herrengarten was designed as a multifunctional open space with a high proportion of greenery. The zoning into a stone urban space and a green garden space offers graduated utilisation options and spatial impressions; from an outer, lively area to an inner, quiet area. A flat stone frame shields the garden from street noise, but remains permeable. The focus is on a public, non-commercial use that offers space for individual and communal activities.
