With the construction of the housing estates “Marzahn” and “Hellersdorf” north of East-Berlin in the 1980s, a spacious area for leisure and recreation was created in the “Wuhleniederung”. After the “Berlin Garden Show” was held in 1987 the compound was constantly further developed and to this day is very popular and attracts increasing numbers of visitors at the “Gärten der Welt” (gardens of the world).
In 2012 the park was significantly extended by acquiring adjacent areas. The goal of the master plan was to examine the planning potential of the newly acquired areas, determine the qualities of the already existing area and from this information develop a long-term overall concept for the park. While the existing areas are characterized by diverse smaller gardens, the newly acquired areas will be turned into spacious parks. The subject of the classic park is captured in the design of the new areas. Organic landscapes and paths will shape the areas character in the future.Additional entrances improve the compounds connection to its surroundings. Features like differently themed playgrounds increase the attractiveness of the place.
The decision to hold the International Garden Show at the “Gärten der Welt” in 2017 additionally qualifies the master plan and lays the foundation for further planning.
