Elcknerplatz, Berlin-Köpenick

Public open space design

As an entrance to the district Koepenick the suburban railway station represents an important traffic junction, which concentrates different traffic functions and provides intensively usable open spaces at the same time. Through the planned conversion of the railway building and the adjacent southern district the area gets its image changed. The slight fillet and shift of the road axis gives the Elcknerplatz a new clear correlation. The result is a convenient multifunctional paved area, which is played on from the new edge of the quarter in the south and from the adjacent street „Bahnhofsstrasse“ in the west.

The paved area is emphasized by the green isle „Copnica“. Right at the beginning of the historic old town Koepenick this „urban landmark“ construes the special regional situation of this island place in a modern way. Another inspiration for this green rest area is the original tree population of the former „station inn“. A picturesque grove of characteristic empress trees grows out of the paved area and stretches out its branches over a casual group of sittabel plant troughs. Here is the favoured place for communication and rest. While the fringe of the place will be part of the main business zone, right on the plaza small weekly markets, feasts and gastronomy are appreciated.
