The site is situated on eastern Saale slope about 5 kilometres south of downtown Jena. The area has a gradient southwestwards. The existing structures were the base for a sustainable development.

The main access for pedestrians is launched from the campus, a square lined with trees which is tray, link and intersection at once. There all paths lead together. Places for all age-groups are offered within the area such as hospital gardens, playgrounds and green courtyards.

As one of the main design ideas the storm water retention and evaporation can take place in the northern water garden as well as in the artificial water trench on the campus.
