Redesign of the public market square
Halle/Saale, 2006
After the demolition of the buildings around the “Roter Turm” and the relocation of the tram line the market square in Halle could be fundamentally restructured. The concept refers to the urban landscape as well as to the functional requirements of the space. The place in which the town hall used to stand is marked by an outline in the ground. In this way a new stop for public transport and a new system for the markets supply could be created. A sturdy, multifunctional surface covers the marketplace. The redesign of the marketplace was strongly influenced by civic participation. Apart from the common discussions, the “Marktplatzzeitung” (marketplace newspaper) was an important source of information. During the period of construction a “Red Box” displayed the plans at the edge of the building site.
